Vaginitis

Vaginitis Diagnosis in Livingston, NJ

The possibility of having any type of gynecological condition can make even the strongest woman a little weary – especially when it produces uncomfortable symptoms that interfere with her daily routine. Vaginitis is a common vaginal infection that causes the vagina to become inflamed, bringing about discharge, pain and an itching sensation. The three most prevalent types are bacterial vaginitis, yeast infections and trichomoniasis.

Causes of Vaginitis

Depending on which type of vaginitis you have, the cause will vary. Bacterial vaginitis is often brought on by sexual intercourse, and happens when there is an alteration of the normal bacteria in your vagina. More specifically, the anaerobic bacterium grows too much in number, and disturbs the previous bacterial balance. Yeast infections take place when there is a serious overproduction of a fungal organism, typically characterized by the C. albicans. Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted disease, triggered by a single-celled parasite called Trichomonas vaginitis – it usually spreads during sexual intercourse with a person who has the infection. If a woman’s vaginitis is noninfectious, it may be caused by foreign objects. Vaginal sprays, douches and perfumed soaps, can all irritate vaginal tissue.

Vaginitis Signs and Symptoms

You could have vaginitis if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, including but not limited to:

  • Pain while urinating
  • Pain during sexual intercourse
  • An alteration in vaginal discharge, including color, the amount and odor
  • Vaginal bleeding, spotting
  • Vaginal itching
  • General irritation and inflammation of the vagina

Additionally, if a woman does have vaginal discharge, the smell and color can help decipher which type of vaginitis she has.

Diagnostic Tests for Vaginitis in New Jersey

When Dr. Quartell suspects that a woman has vaginitis, he will perform a series of routine diagnostic tests to figure out whether or not she has it, and if so, what type of vaginitis it is. He’ll first review your medical history, which will briefly cover your history of sexually transmitted diseases or vaginal diseases, as these put you at a higher risk for vaginitis. He will then perform a pelvic exam, using a speculum to check for inflammation or abnormal discharge inside of the vagina. If vaginitis is, indeed, suspected, he will also collect a sample of cervical or vaginal discharge to be sent out to a lab – this helps figure out exactly which type of vaginitis it is. Lastly, a pH test may be performed; an elevated pH level can reveal whether or not a woman has bacterial vaginitis or trichomoniasis.

Treating Vaginitis in Livingston, NJ

Dr. Quartell and his staff will provide a specific treatment plan based on your medical history, type of vaginitis and needs. Similar to the causes, treatment is specific to the type of vaginitis a woman has. Bacterial vaginitis is usually treated with a prescription tablet – such as Flagyl – to be taken orally (which is also used to treat trichomoniasis as well). Additionally, a gel or cream – like MetroGel or Cleocin – can also be applied to the vagina. Yeast infections are easily treatable, and patients who have them are often prescribed antifungal cream, or a suppository. Noninfectious vaginitis is resolved with a change in soap, detergent and sanitary napkins.
