Prenatal Care

A Pregnancy is an extremely special and exciting time in a woman’s life. During this remarkable 9 month journey, it’s important to make several lifestyle changes and be regularly checked up and tested by your doctor or midwife. This type of preventative health care is known as Prenatal Care, and it’s essential for detecting and treating any problems early on as well as preventing others that could arise.

At Anthony C. Quartell, M.D. & Associates, our expert staff is here to guide you through your entire pregnancy to ensure that you and your baby are in optimal health. Here’s what you can expect…

Your First Prenatal Visit in Livingston NJ

The first prenatal visit is the longest and most comprehensive. Your doctor or midwife will begin by asking you about your medical history including your menstrual cycle, gynecological history, previous pregnancies and any complications you may have encountered, medication use and overall lifestyle, including use of tobacco, alcohol and caffeine.

From there, your doctor or midwife will then perform a physical exam followed by a blood test. The physical exam includes regular protocols such as measuring your weight, height and BMI. You will then be administered a breast exam, vaginal exam and possibly a pap smear, depending on your last screening. The blood test is given to determine your blood type, measure your hemoglobin and check for immunity and exposure of certain infections.

The most exciting part of your prenatal visit is establishing your due date. Keep in mind that majority of women do not give birth on their exact due date, but it is an estimate that will help your doctor or midwife monitor the growth and progress of your baby.

Your first prenatal visit is an exciting event, but it’s important that you are honest with your doctor or midwife about any physical discomfort you may experiencing, or any other concerns you may have. Your doctor or midwife is there to help you through this journey, so it’s important that you establish a trust with them and utilize them to their full potential.

Follow-up Prenatal Visits in Livingston NJ

Typically, if you are between the ages of 18-35 and determined to be healthy by your doctor or midwife, you will likely have to come in for a prenatal visit every 4-6 weeks for the first 7 months (or 28 weeks) of your pregnancy.

During your 8th month (week 28 to 36), you will likely come in every 2 to 3 weeks and every week in the final month (weeks 36-40).

If your pregnancy is considered “high-risk,” your doctor or midwife will determine how frequently they would like you to come in depending on your particular circumstance.

During these follow-up prenatal visits, your doctor or midwife will test your urine, check your blood pressure, measure your weight, measure the growth of your uterus and baby, examine your abdomen to determine the position of your baby and offer any prenatal testing based on your discussions or symptoms you may be experiencing.

What’s most important is that you honestly communicate with your doctor or midwife. Every prenatal visit is an opportunity for you to discuss any discomfort or unusual symptoms you may be experiencing, as well as any general concerns you may have.
